THE FACES AND THE STREETS: Albury Wodonga 1955-2000
Devised and edited by Karen Donnelly with final year Photography students
The Faces and the Streets project and subsequent exhibition and publication was inspired by The McPherson Collection held at the Albury Library Museum. Comprising of over 34,000 images, the collection chronicles life in post-war regional Australia and captured life’s rituals, documented the built environment and civic ceremonies.
Forty photographs were selected from the collection and final year Bachelor of Arts Photography students (Charles Sturt University-Albury Campus) were invited to select three images and use them as a point of reference for new works. Dr Bruce Pennay (Charles Sturt University) and Isobel Crombie (Senior Curator of Photography, National Gallery of Victoria) provided essays while excerpts from the novels of Australian authors Charles Waterstreet and Graham Jackson were also included in the publication. The esteemed cultural commentator and author Humphrey McQueen opened the exhibition.
